Just for Today ... (12.2.09)

Just for today …

  • I’m going to mourn the loss of a friend who made me laugh … mostly because I can’t wrap my mind around how his wife of 33 years, and his three kids, are going to get up tomorrow and function without him there.
  • I’m going to wish I was home pulling all of my Santas out of hibernation and leisurely arranging them on the shelves in the living room while Rosemary Clooney sings “White Christmas” in the background.
  • I’m going to try not to beat myself up for the things I didn’t accomplish—because attending a funeral today reminded me that those things really don’t matter. At all.
  • I’m going to look forward to taco night.
  • I’m going to let sleeping dogs lie. And cats, too.
  • I’m going to plan what kind of Christmas cookies I want to bake this year.
  • I’m going to watch Glee because it makes me smile.
  • I’m going to savor a few pages of the December issue of Country Living before I fall asleep, marking the things I like with a dog-eared page corner.
  • I’m going to wear my new coat and my favorite “special occasions” scarf because today is all there is—and it, most definitely, warrants the title of a “special occasion.”

Just For Today

Just for today ...
  • I'm going to pretend I won the lottery, so that I can buy a new car for the young girl behind me in the grocery who left the store with her package of duct tape, then worked feverishly in the parking lot to use it to hold together the bumper of her old car.

  • I'm going to be really, really thankful for that one person who noticed how hard I work (and for that family of deer I noticed this morning).

  • I'm going to be proud that I delivered on a promise that I made two months ago. Even if it was to my rabbit. (He finally got his new Amish-built hutch and moved from the damp, dark garage into the courtyard by the fountain.)

  • I'm going to accept the fact that while I may not be as perfect as everyone around me, I am authentic. I am sincere. And this is how God made me.

  • I'm going to approach tomorrow with a pay-it-forward mindset ... because I'm WAY too blessed to do it any other way.
