Taking Matters Into Our Own Hands

Okay. I don't know about you, but I'm about tired of seeing HUGE price increases in EVERYTHING lately. Not just gas, but even FOOD, for Pete's sake! (Who is "Pete" anyway?) Someone at work mentioned that the price of pop is going to increase by 30 percent in September. I started to say how ridiculous it all is and this person proceeded to tell me that the soda pop companies were actually "doing us a favor by waiting until September." Come on. Who the heck believes that hogwash? I don't need the stuff.

Anyway, my Mama once taught me that you can't bring up a gripe without proposing a solution--so I decided to take matters into my own hands (after coming home from the grocery all perturbed on Friday). On Saturday, our first stop was the local farmer's market. Now, I've been once or twice per season in past years, but decided this is the year where I need to (a) put my money where my community is (b) boycott the fruit being expensively airflighted in from East Uranus (c) go greener (d) come to my senses. (You'd be really proud of me, green friends, I even took my own Past Perfect Style cloth bags to cart my loot home in.) When we arrived at the market, I was overwhelmed. THE PLACE WAS PACKED WITH PEOPLE! Hurray! Go smart people! Go green! Go community! Go team! Screw East Uranus! Sorry.

So, we (and hundreds of others) stocked up on very-fresh-from-the-garden zucchini, tomatoes, melon, corn on the cob, green beans and peaches. (I would've purchased onions, potatoes and green peppers had I'd come to my senses earlier in the grocery store on Friday.)
Then, we headed home. First, I watered my tomato plants well. Then, I cleaned, skinned, cooked and canned peaches. I found a great recipe that used honey for a sweetener, along with cinnamon sticks. It was so easy. I'm planning on "putting up" another batch, along with some peach jam this week. Then we'll move on to apples. I'm going to look up how to do sun-dried tomatoes next. Ahhh ... if you could only see my pantry. Like money in the bank.
